Week 7, Term 3, 2024

Good Morning Port Community,

VIEW THE VIDEO UPDATE HERE

I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. For the remainder of this year, I’ll be trialling a new communication approach. The Principal’s Report will no longer be part of the School Newsletter. Instead, I’ll be sending this Principal’s Update each Monday, following our fortnightly Friday newsletter. Each fortnight I’ll send this written update and an accompanying video update which you can access via the link above.

These updates will provide more detailed information on the strategic school improvements we’re leading, primarily through evidence-informed approaches to teaching and learning. The goal is to keep you informed about key developments and highlight important content directly in your inbox.

Highlights from the Last Fortnight

The past two weeks have been eventful. Our Trivia Night was a big success—thank you to the PFA volunteers who organised it and to everyone who attended. Last week, we celebrated Book Week, and it was wonderful to see our students embracing literacy, especially during Wednesday’s Dress-Up Day and Parade.

For more details on recent school events, including our new school sponsorship agreement with WHITEFOX, your opportunity to provide feedback on our policies, and plenty more check out our newsletter. If you haven’t already, you can also subscribe directly to our newsletter.

Science of Learning Transition

Our Proud to Be at Port vision focuses on Excellence, Collaboration, and Community. At the heart of any primary school’s work is ensuring that every child achieves excellent literacy and numeracy levels. While many of our students consistently perform above state averages and national minimum standards in NAPLAN, we’re always striving to do better and move closer to our vision of excellence for your children.

This drive for continuous improvement is guiding our transition to a new teaching and learning approach based on the science of learning (SOL). SOL is a research-backed framework that helps us understand how students learn best. By adopting SOL principles, we can create classroom environments that optimise student engagement, memory, and problem-solving.

Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing more details about how these changes will impact your child’s learning experience and how we’re supporting our teachers in this journey. If you want to dive more deeply into this topic now, the Australian Education Research Organisation provides a great overview of the evidence and its implications for schools.

Warm regards,
