Port Melbourne Primary School is a vibrant, co-educational public school offering a rich learning environment for students from Prep to Year 6.
Located in the beautiful bay side community of Port Melbourne, just 2.5km from the CBD, our school is surrounded by green spaces, with Garden City Reserve next door and Murphy Reserve’s sports fields just a short walk away.

A modern school with a proud history
Our school blends heritage charm with contemporary learning spaces. The original 1890 school building was transformed in 2008 to create modern, open-plan classrooms and our administration centre.
Since then, we have continued to grow and evolve, adding:
- A purpose-built library, art room, and flexible learning spaces
- A multi-purpose hall and music room
- Four two-storey classroom blocks
- A competition-standard gymnasium
Recent upgrades have further enhanced our STEM, Languages, and administration facilities, ensuring our students have access to the very best learning environments.
Space to learn, play, and grow
Port Melbourne Primary School sits on more than 1.5 hectares of land (around 3.8 acres) – making our school the largest primary school site in the inner-city area. To put that in perspective, that’s almost the same size as the MCG playing surface! This space allows us to combine modern learning facilities with generous outdoor areas, giving our students room to learn, play and thrive.
Facilities
Our expansive school grounds provide a balance of structured and free play areas. These include:
- Co-teaching and flexible learning spaces
- Arts and Music Hub
- Library, Language and STEM rooms.
Sport and outdoor areas:
- Gymnasium with a full-sized basketball/netball court
- Sports oval with a running track, long jump pit and AFL/rugby football goals
- Soccer pitch
- 3 separate playgrounds (designed for different age groups, catering to their physical, cognitive, and social needs)
- Outdoor basketball and downball/foursquare courts
- Shaded spaces for quiet activities and passive play
- Vegetable and herb gardens
- A buddy bench, where students can connect with a friend when they need one.
We know that play is just as important as learning. That is why we offer varied spaces to suit every child’s needs, whether they enjoy running, climbing, creating, or chatting with friends.

Supervision at school
Student safety at Port Melbourne Primary School is our highest priority and the safe and appropriate supervision of students is an important element of our duty of care to students. Part of this duty is ensuring parents and students are aware of our student supervision arrangements before and after school.
Before school: School grounds are supervised from 8:45am, Monday – Friday.
After school: School grounds are supervised until 3:45pm, Monday – Friday. Students on school grounds outside these times will not be supervised (unless they are attending a before or after school care program or supervised extracurricular activity).
Parents/carers are requested to ensure that students do not attend school outside of these supervised times unless they are attending before or after school care, or a pre-arranged supervised activity (i.e. sports practice).
Families are encouraged to contact Team Kids via Port Melbourne Primary | TeamKids for more information about the before and after school care facilities available to our school community.
For a copy of our school’s Yard Duty and Supervision Policy you can access a copy of the full policy by emailing us at port.melbourne.ps@education.vic.gov.au. This policy includes our student supervision arrangements across the school day, including before and after school.
