Principal Team

Tom Cain
Principal

An award-winning educator and leader, Tom is dedicated to building high-performing schools that strengthen communities. He believes that great schools don’t just shape students—they uplift entire communities, and he is passionate about fostering learning environments where students, staff, and families thrive together.

Tom leads Port Melbourne Primary with a focus on evidence-based teaching, continuous improvement, and a strong school culture. His expertise has been shaped by a Master’s degree from the University of Melbourne and Bachelor’s degrees from Monash University, along with leadership development through the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Deloitte, and The Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.

His innovative leadership has been recognised with multiple Victorian Education Excellence Awards for School Improvement (2019, 2022), the Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education (2022), and the ACEL New Voice Scholarship (2023).

Outside of school, Tom is a keen cyclist and enjoys spending time with his two children.

Katie Klajnblat
Assistant Principal

Katie leads Teaching and Learning at Port Melbourne Primary, driving the school’s shift to Explicit Instruction and ensuring every student benefits from the most effective, research-backed teaching practices. Passionate about high-impact instruction, she is dedicated to approaches grounded in cognitive science, making learning structured, engaging, and built for long-term success.

She holds a Diploma and a Graduate Diploma of Primary Education from Monash University and has further developed her expertise through coaching and school improvement programs with the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership and Monash University. A firm believer in collaboration, feedback, and data-driven decision-making, Katie works closely with staff to refine teaching practices and drive student achievement.

Her leadership ensures that instructional excellence and continuous improvement remain at the heart of PMPS.

Outside of school, Katie enjoys travel, hiking, and baking and is always looking for new challenges—whether in the classroom, outdoors, or the kitchen.

Kim Nickels
Assistant Principal

Kim leads Wellbeing, Engagement, and Inclusion at Port Melbourne Primary, ensuring that every student feels supported, valued, and empowered to thrive. She is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-performing learning environment, where wellbeing and academic success go hand in hand.

A passionate advocate for positive school culture, Kim leads our Proud Port Behaviours framework, drawing on trauma-informed practice principles and School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) to build confidence, resilience, and belonging in students.

She also oversees our inclusion program, ensuring that no student is left behind. Working closely with staff and families, Kim provides tailored support and interventions to meet the diverse needs of every child.

Holding degrees in Education and Arts, Kim brings a broad and thoughtful perspective to her work, ensuring that students not only achieve but feel connected and confident in their learning journey.

Outside of school, Kim enjoys reading, sewing, and travelling, always exploring new ideas, stories, and creative projects.
